A Reflection on “ Confessions of an Economic Hit Man
How can a president be overthrown just for increasing minimum wages?
Isn’t it a just action a president can possibly take to favour his people?
But even then, Manuel Zelaya was overthrown for doing just the same.
Does a man, who fights for the maritime trade route that legally belongs to its country ,
deserve to die?
Isn’t it a duty of a president to protect the assets of its country?
But even then, Omer Torroji was assassinated in a well orchestrated plane crash.
Doesn't a man , who rightfully accused the group of missionaries for colluding
with oil companies and manipulating the innocent minds of indigenous people, deserve to
live ?
Isn’t it heroic to speak against the manipulation of indigenous communities at the hand
powerful exploiters?
But even then Jaime Roldos was killed.
Isn’t is necessary to overthrow the foreign oil companies that exploit your land and turn the country’s workforce into modern army of slaves?
Doesn't it seem a logical step to better the economy of your country?
But even then, Rafael Correa was forced to auction rainforest to save his presidency.
My purpose is not to tell my reader about already known, yet not really celebrated, facts.
My purpose of writing this review to confess that before reading John Perkins book
I did not know anything about these figures. I did not even aware about the extent
of difficulties people of developing countries are facing. Perhaps the greatest credit
goes to global media that only talks about those issue which present certain chosen
countries and related figures in favourable light and rest of the stuff is either ignored
altogether or is presented by giving it least possible importance.
I used to be ignorant, or so I am feeling right now about my previous way of gathering
facts and figures about socio-political scenarios. Did I ever honestly try to understand the
true causes of economic imbalance? Sometimes I did but my means were not reliable
enough.Sometime an article shared by some friend on social website used to lead me
to some newspaper and I managed to give a quick reading to some news dealing with
economic chaos devouring old perpetual victim of poverty. Such brief moments spent in
careless reading of bitter facts were enough to make me realize that I am little more
politically aware now. While this was not the case , that I came to know after getting
hold of John Perkins’ book.
I know history, especially the one that spans the latter half of 21st century, cannot be
described in terms of Black and white , there are various grey areas that need to be
investigated to separate right from wrong and to explain the wrong that committed to
protect a larger Right. John Perkins has very well established the point ,at least for me,
that economy is the new faith of the world and that can very well be used to corrupt
already faithless souls. The proprietors of global empire work under the supervision
of some Lord Voladmort (the one who must not be named) and keep looking for loopholes
in struggling countries’ economies and use these loopholes to enter the region in sinister
yet somehow justified way. And even if they do not be able to justify them , they do not
often find anyone to ask for justification. Who can ever stand against the surge of global
empires? The ones who tried, they were either killed of or faced utter defamation.
But as a lay reader, I believe, John Perkins’s purpose was not just to unveil the concept
of EHM and the inevitabilities faced by the leaders of struggling countries due to internal
corruption coupled with the deadly intrusion of jackals. He has tried to target the
conscience of common being. This global greed that lurks about fiendishly and keep looking
for easily corruptible soul to enhance its power is somehow the working of each of us
who are prone to fall for the dream of artificial easy life away from the lap of nature and
much under the close scrutiny of corporate world. The moment we stop growing our own
vegetables and start looking for a chain of super stores where we could find , excessively
expensive, fresh ones stored in air conditioned environment , we become a direct and
rather subtle victim of Global Empire.
We can probably fight the armies of economic hit-men by taking lesson from the working
of true mother nature that does not tolerate the rape of its resources and shows its anger
in the form of global warming, and by realizing at individual and collective level that lust
for accumulating money is used to establish modern slave plantations where the hired
ones are often selling their souls along with physical labour. Establish the connection with
the very land you have come from and you will, one day, return to and do not let the fear
of death weaken this bonding.
